We have a huge beautiful redwood in our front yard and I would love to use some of the leaves (they are not really needles like from pines) that have fallen down underneath as mulch. Would it be good for this or is there something in the leaves that will not be good for the soil?

They would be great to add to your beds - that is a good way to add organic matter to your soil. You should probably mow them into smaller pieces so that they decompose faster, and it will look nicer too I think.
