I read to prune back honeysuckle to 18 inches but I thought it also said it blooms on old wood. Can someone clarify that for me? Mine is about 4-5 feet tall and I only have about 6 vines. They're starting to leaf out so I know it's time to prune. I have a Goldflame, not the common invasive honeysuckle.

Oh gosh sweetle wish i could help.

My experience with honeysuckle. The flower grows at the tip of the vine. Once I pruned mine back, i didn't have many flowers left & it was all woody for a long time. The only parts which did grow flowers were the parts i did not prune back. It started to look real ugly until I left it alone. Now it starting to look great again.

I think a shrub is the best way to go if a vine is too tall for the area you plant it in. Just added that last part for anyone thinking about planting honeysuckle.

Looks like we're supposed to cut out old canes every few years and pinch new growth from the tips to encouage branching. I'm glad I didn't cut it all back! I might have lost my flowers!

Thanks guys!!
