Ok I have my backyard all planned out! I need to go out and measure to make sure things will fit.

We are going to have a butterfly garden, a fragrant garden, a vegetable garden and then some plants along the walk ways.

Since I'm a noob, I found these ready made plans. I figure I can adjust things as I go along and learn things.

The only thing I haven't figure out yet is how to do the flagstone (i think that's what I want to use) for the patio part. I've been reading but I didn't find clear answers for these questions:
- what preparation steps to take?
- how do I ensure that the water won't run TO my house? How to make sure the drainage is ok?
- My current patio is concrete, how would i cover that up?
- Or would you guys leave the grass in that area too? My yard is not level so I'm going to have to work on that too.

Ok I made a plan. It's NOT at scale at all but this would be the general look of it.

The shrubs are because I dislike those neighbors and they have this stupid light that goes on/off all night long and it bugs the crap out of me. I know what kind I want but i have no idea what they are called. They can grow pretty high, usually in a tear drop shape.

The shed is there now, I don't know why they put it there.

I have doors to the front yard on both sides and I found some great shade borders I could put there. (I didn't put this on the picture but the gates are on the front of the house so the borders would continue on the side of the house)

The undecided might just be some container things. There are a few containers I wanted to do. The veggie garden will probably be longer. I still need to go out and measure.

The grass area would be fenced off because of the pooch.

Anyways, this will take a while to finish but I think having a plan is a good thing. What do you guys think?

The 2 green circles are a tree and a tree/shrub thing. I'm not sure what kind they are but they are not too big.

Really nice! That is a very good idea...I am a proponent as I have the bad habit of looking at my area with a handfull of seeds...scratch my head and go...um...that ways is north so here...here...ok GROW! I myself have already sown lettuce but by parsley and just found out they don't like each other! ROFL! Ok, I have planned before. Pathways, check out the forum..I liked to use sand for leveling

usually that's me but I don't want to go "oh crap, that whole bed would have been better over there". And I only want to do this once. lol

The hardest part I think is finding out how to put the flagstone down and the preparations for that. I'll have to do some research.

Looks like a nice layout - my suggestion for the undecided area would be to try an herb garden it would go nicely along with the vegetable garden...
Just a thought -

I am going to try to upload your Butterfly garden bed design here.
It is the same bed just written 2 different ways.
The Buddleia is going to get big but it is very airy so it will be fine that close to the others.

Looks awesome!!! I can't wait to get this going!!

I had them mark and there are a lot more cables than they had marked last year. Everything is going to have to be above ground. fun fun!

I love working out new beds. Have lots of fun doing the job and be sure to share with photos as you go along. Best garden journal is a pictorial one.

We have a 10yo flagstone courtyard, pathway and stairs. I have photos posted in an album, PM me if you want to know how it was done-it has held up well.~Andrea
