I am seriously wanting to start a container garden, one problem, I've got a massive black thumb and am quick to give up. So here's my question, What are the BEST inexpensive containers I can use, I am on a budget and I want to grow numerous things. also whats the best soil/mix to use? or is it different for different veggies? |

5-gallon paint buckets... be sure to cut drainage holes in them in the bottom, and maybe even a few on the side. If you don't have any lying around, you can buy them at Home Depot or Lowe's for a couple of bucks a piece. They are good for growing any large vegetable-- tomatoes... zucchini, etc. For smaller veggies like jalepeno peppers you can use a one gallon plastic plant pot. Saving your pots and reusing them is a good way to work on a budget. In terms of soil, a mixture of potting soil, compost, and maybe some peat moss and perlite would be a good basic mix, along with some veggie fertilizer. Keep the plants watered, especially when it's hot, and you should do fine. Some veggies, like tomatoes, require staking or a tomato cage in order to stay upright. Hope this helps, and welcome to GG.

Think recycling, I use margarine, ine cream and other containers, depending on the plant I'm useing, when done wash well and reuse or recycle them, if you know someone who buys plants ask them for the pots. or watch the garbage man they always have them hanging off the truck here and would gladdly give them to you. |
