Do roses have to be somehow covered up in southern Wisconsin in the winter? |

I'm no rose expert but up here in zone 2b I have the Canadian shrub roses. I do nothing special to them and they return in the spring. I have to prune out some of the dead branches but I am pleased with them. Leafette |

Hi! I am in West Allis and am a rose grower. Yes, you still need to offer winter protect for you roses. it would help if I knew what kind you had. I know there are many winter hardy and "sub zero" roses "designed" for cold weather, but it's always better to be safe and offer them some protection. I use leaves (always in abundant supply after they have been run throught the mulcher and bury them pretty deeply, I also use the prunings from the pines and hedges on top of the leaves. I still have to cut some of the roses down to the ground in spring, but as long as the roots have been protected they bounce back pretty quickly. I also try to only plant own root roses, no graft union bud to worry about, also no suckers to worry about either. Hope this helps Sass |

I will have to remember that Sass. It will nice to not have to prune so much of my rose bush in the Spring. |

You do need to prune your rose bushes. Late winter, early spring. Hybrid teas need some shaping so they don't get scraggly. Shaping the others makes for a nicer bush come spring and bloom.
