This sounds interesting. Don't forget to close up any spaces on the link. www.learn2grow.com/gardeningguides/seasonalgardeni ng/winter/crawlspacegardening.aspx |

I have a huge crawl space that I use. I have boston ferns that hang under the house. Take them out on pretty days. In the spring just give them a good haircut some new compost and hang them out. In a few weeks they will be just as pretty as what is in the stores. I also winter impatients under there. I just cut them back and throw some water on them about once a month. Every time I put water on them they get new leaves. I also have my potted hostas and some bleeding heart vine that I winter under there. |

Thanks, Butterfly. I wasn't completely sold on the idea, so it is good to hear from someone that does it. |

I have a 1,340 sq. foot crawl space that is an even height of about 5 foot. I can stand up between the floor joists. I have lived here over two years, and just got down there. Biggest surprise was no bugs found yet. I have a sump pump and it is well needed because I seem to live on a spring. The neighborhood is called Rock Springs. There is plastic down, and I found a few wet spots on the plastic. I have concrete footing walls all the way down. I am very excited about the idea of storing and gardening down there. Unfortunately, I haven't checked the winter temps there. Hopefully the temps will be well above freezing, all winter long. I live in Central Illinois. Our worst ever temp is about -20 degrees. The fluorescent lights will add some heat, and make it more inviting down there. Cheap carpet runners and knee pads will make it all quite comfy. I suffer from cabin fever, so this will be a blessing! So far I am thinking of cold loving flowers, overwintering my Jade Plants. I divide them for gifts. Boston Ferns, cold loving flowers, mushrooms, starting garden plants, worm farming etc. I am retiring next Spring, and wll have plenty of time. Any ideas and info will be appreciated. All the best, Ron Wagner Decatur, IL |
