Are there any good books for an idiot gardener like me to start and do know the basics about gardening?

Hi Dierdre,

Wow, that's a tough question. Not because there aren't any books, but because there are so many that cover so many different aspects of gardening.

Is there some aspect or area of garden that particularly interests you? Do you want to grow vegetables? Do you want to grow organically? Are you looking to plant flowers in a flower bed, or just a small herb garden to spice things up in your kitchen? And then there are the water gardens, rock gardens, desert gardens, gardens designed to be attractive to butterflies, hummingbirds, or to be a habitat to support a whole range of wildlife from flowers and frogs to bugs and bats.

If you're looking for a general introduction to the subject, and maybe give you ideas so you can answer the question above, I don't think you can go wrong with the Dummies series of books. They have one for Gardening for Dummies. It's one I don't own, but that's only because it came out long after I'd already been gardening already. It has a good overview of the basics you need to know so that you have enough of an understanding to get growing.

Once you've absorbed that book, check out the Composting and Mulching forum. I talk there about a couple of books on mulch and compost that I highly reccommend if you have the inclination to try it out.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

Sincerely,

Robert

eventually we want to have a vegetable garden and an herb garden. We also want a butterfly garden. Right now I'm concentrating on the front yard. I started one flower bed and planted bulbs. I'll have to plant the rest in the spring.

I guess I just don't know where to start. I'll look into that book because I really don't know anything.

So Dierdre you have already started one flower bed. Is the only thing in it bulbs?

Yes so far, that's the only thing in it. Tulips and daffs.

I really like "The Garden Primer" by Barbara Damrosch. I have found it to be very comprehensive.

I have the first edition: http://www.amazon.com/Garden-Primer-Barbara-Damros ch/dp/0894803166/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&q id=1202562714&sr=8-2

but you can preorder the second from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Garden-Primer-Second-Barbara -Damrosch/dp/0761122753/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s= books&qid=1202562714&sr=8-1

I may order the second based on the description!!!!

I will! When I ordered it 10$ mattered (gotta love it) but we'll see. It says the second book is 100% organic. I'll probably buy the second edition if i like this one
