Pine needles?

We have several huge pine trees and many needles. I see they take a while to break down in the compost bin and this past year I did spread a layer over the garden area. Someone told me that wasn't a good idea? I would think they would be good in the soil or as a mulch - any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...Debbie in IL |

Here in the deep south (lots of pine trees ) we use it alot as a mulch. It sells for about 3.50 a bale here. As a gardener I know it has some acid in it so it's better to put it around your acid loving plants. But here it is the main mulch mostly because of termites. Here they don't want you to use wood chips up close to the house. If it's free use it! |

Yes I live in SC too, and pine mulch is the number one mulch of choice. If you placed it in the garden this fall with thoughts it would compost, It most likely will not. However. I have spread it over sleeping beds and then rake it off come time to plant and put it right back on after you finish. The pine mulch will do great protecting the plants from heat and will keep the moisture level up during the dry times. Linda B |
