French Garden Gravel?

We'd like to use the French style-white-ish gravel that you see at Versailles and in traditional French garden pathways. I think that is what we want to use, but perhaps someone here can recommend something better? One of my concerns is that I don't want something too fine so as to also collect easy on shoes/dogs. I think I want something that is larger in size so as to prevent water from collecting and puddling on it (i.e, allows water to drain under and away).
