Has anyone started strawberrys from seed? If so how well did they do and is there anything particular I need to do? |

I only tried growing from seed once with no sucess. It was a kit that came with a pot, seeds and soil. I recieved it as a gift so I did not know how old the seeds were. That might have been the problem Sorry I can't help you out.

I had a kit once, too. It grew into a nice little plant and ended up having 3 small strawberries that were good. I started it really, really late--in June maybe. If I had started it earlier, maybe it would have done better. The strawberries I grew last summer were not from seed, and the birds got most of them. |

I'm so glad this thred got started. Strawberries are about the only fruit my husband will eat. So this year I am going to plant a BUNCH of them, my only problem is keeping the birds and the chickens out. I kind of got an idea how to take care of that, but does anyone know when is the best time to plant in zone 6? It is 11 degrees out right now, but I have noticed I still have some strawberry plants that are green from last year. Are strawberries semi-evergreen? |

Hey Dimona, I found this site. http://www.mastergardener.net/tn/davidson/zone6.ht m It says for zone 6 you can plant strawberries in March! Here is a more general guide. http://usagardener.com/how_to_grow_fruits/how_to_g row_strawberries.php Tink - this latter link may be useful for you, too. Hope this helps! |

Thanks, Mo. Those links will be helpful to me, also. Apparently, I started my strawberries way late last year, too, although earlier than the seed ones I started the other time. |

Maybe the links bensmom posted will have that info. I'd sure like to know your plans for keeping the birds out! Japanese beetles are also a problem. |

One thing to know is that some strawberries are meant to not produce for the first year! It's not that they won't; it's just that you're not supposed to let them, and now I can't remember why. I planted everbearing, which are okay to let produce the first year, but as I said, the birds got most of them. Birds are a HUGE problem.

Thanks bensmom. I will definately check out that link. As far as keeping the birds out.....you know those HUGE old satelites that people had in there yard? Well, my mom had one that was black wire mesh, my husband is planning on useing it as a roof and raiseing it up off of the ground using old t-posts. He says I'll be able to water by using a sprinkler head fitting it to the top. We are planning on putting netting on the sides to keep the birds and my cats out and so I can get in there to weed. In my mind (and our drawing) it will look like a mini gazebo. Well, if you use your imagination. I think it will be too shady. I was thinking about just building a little building and having netting all over it? Who knows, Hubby will figure something out because he LOVES them so much. Thank heavens. LOL |
