Browsing the Burpee catalog, I noticed that hostas do well in shade, and had a full-color vision of a tub of hostas in the foyer of our apartment building. I've ordered the seeds, and I have a tub... Am I nuts, or is this actually possible? |

Well... I don't really know about growing them indoors full-time. I would imagine that as long as they have florescent lighting they would do all right. I am planning on growing hostas from seed too this year. Per the information found here http://earthnotes.tripod.com/seeds.htm hostas are difficult to grow from seed, with germination being slow (60-90 days) and irregular. Just wanted to let you know about that. |

I think I'll start them in my room, and only tell the other tenants about them if/when they grow up to be real plants.

I am having fairly fast germination of what I've gotten started so far, putting a pat of earthworm castings on top of the seeds. |

THe only problem you may have is they need an occasional rest and cold srtatification to continue growing for a long period of time. If you can take them outside for a couple of months each fall/winter to give them a good cold rest they should do fine. (you can also simulate this in a refrigerator too (NOT a freezer) if you have room in your refrigerator )
