shrub help

have shrubs planted near tree, slow growth ,little flowers as compared to same planted 50 feet away. any ideas ? please, south florida - I can be contacted by PM

My guess is that the one under the tree is competeing with the tree for sun light and water.

What type of tree? I know Pines will affect the acidity of the soil and black walnuts produce a chemical in their roots that can burn other plants. But I think either of these would produce signs of damage and not just a stunting of the bush.

Treeman or Ron could probably be of more help in this area.

Welcome Jimmy to Garden Guides, hope someone can answer your question though I tend to agree that competing with the tree for nutrients and light might be a problem.
