Hi, My name is Angela, I'm a 22 year old college junior-ish. I never quite know what grade level to say I'm in, but junior is pretty much right! I attend the University of Missouri and am studying Sociology but this semester I'm going to add some sort of plant science or sustainable ag facet to my degree. You can take the girl off the farm, but sometimes the farm just never leaves the girl! I grew up on a farm in northeast Missouri and have been gardening my whole life. I come by the passion pretty naturally as my grampa's passion was gardening and my gramma loves house plants. This spring i'm going to be trying my hand at growing veggies in containers for the first time. We'll see how it goes! Aside from veggies, I adore succulents. I have an aloe which is about a foot tall and a jade plant about the same size. After I graduate I would love to use my degree to teach people in urban area's how to garden in vacent lots, or rooftops, whatever available areas; to help people become more self sufficient. That is a little bit about myself. I'd love to get to know all of ya'll! Angela |

Hi Angela! I'm a newbie on this site too. Hubby and I moved out to the boonies from an urban area. It was not easy being country type people living in the middle of a city! We planted everything we could everywhere we could. Containers are a great idea for urban gardens. We would buy more plants than we needed so we could give some away to neighbors that normally would not have grown anything. Giving away herbs were always a big hit for people too. I wish you luck with school and your new gardening adventures! |

Hello Angela & Trochelwoman & welcome to GG from the shores of Lake Greenwood, SC. You are so right about 'you can take the girl out of the country but you can't take the country out of the girl...that's me, country born & country bred. My family always had a large veggie garden & canned our veggies, raised chickens & a couple of hogs. We lived on the lake & had a store/boat landing so needless to say I was fishing at an early age & still do. I don't think that I would ever be happy in town or crowded places. Keep those hands dirty, gimlet |

Welcome to GG from a rather soggy/foggy WI, ruepickle! I never knew how to classify myself in college, either, as I was almost always a semester behind classwise, yet creditwise I was a semester ahead...result of switching majors three times. Anyhow, thanks for joining us and feel free to dig around, poke your head into any forums that look interesting!

ruepickle began when my dad and his siblings were young and would play outside. There was a plant they didn't know the name of, so they made a name up for it. . . the ruepickle plant. My uncle later came to Mizzou and met a girl whose last name was Ruebottom, and told the family about her similar name at supper, and grampa commented that we're related to some Ruebottoms. Turns out we're related to this girl! So, its' kind of a random family story that I thought would make a good screen name! More excitement on my front, Today i was hanging out with one of my friends, and I'm going to help her plant her garden this spring! She also had one of her friends with her, who is from Belarus and misses gardening, and she's going to help us too! I'm really excited about this, even though they live 2 hours from me! |

Haha! Very cute A big welcome from cold, wet...foggy...slightly snowy Seattle! (give it a day and we will be in shorts for 6 hours! No wonder our plants are nuts here, they never know what to expect!). Good to see you both here, this is a great place to hang out
