For some reason my bananna tree had all these little nats coming out of the dirt and of course I noticed this just as my husbands family was to be arriving for Christms Eve..Little nats flying around was not pretty..so I put it out in my 3 season porch, and forgot it out there until today
Now the leaves are all curled up and it looks wilted...
DID I KILL IT??? or will it maybe come back and what the heck are those bugs??Help!!

Probably Thrips...but either way I just got over and infestation of them, they took out a couple of my coffee saplings. What I did was watered all the plants with some soapy water. Dead, all the little flying bastards are dead now, haha.

if you get to them now, probably not. If they do, just do the soapy water again. I put a decent squirt in a cup of water AFTER filling it and an easy stir, just water enough to wet the top soil and it will kill off any eggs. The flying buggers do not last long so they will die off. If you have a large enough glass (clear) anything that you can put OVER the banana it should be fine, once it warms up even if the top dies off it should...SHOULD...grow back.

Well I am still getting some little dasterdly bugs..maybe I am not using enough soap in my water, it seems to kill them but the next day more are there, maybe I just need to dump the dirt and repot the plant. just where do those bugs come from...old dirt?? I think the dirt I used had been around the house for a while.

Where do bugs come from? Have you ever heard about the birds and the bees? Same thing for bugs.

Thrips are so tiny you'd miss them. They have slender bodies and I don't know if they fly around. I had them on my daylilies and they made the buds drop. You might want to go to a pest website and try to ID your bugs.

In the meantime, I'd replace the soil.

Sounds like possible Fungus Gnats. I had them on occasion when my AV collection was huge. They are usually coming from organic matter in the soil, so as sweetle
mentioned, a soil change is probably a good idea. Also, to get rid of the little airborne beasties, get some yellow sticky cards. You can sometimes find them in gardening centers, and lots of gardening supply companies sell them. Bugs are attracted to yellow, and get stuck on the cards.

I also had Thrips in a batch of violets I purchased. They are quite small, and can cause disfigured or lack of blooms. Thats where they love to hang out. (Always a good idea to dis bud any new flowering plant before bringing into the home)

OH...THE YELLOW STICKYS!!! Anyways, the blue ones are good too, I cheated, I took yellow and blue construction paper once and taped them together then sprayed them with glue. it worked great...dang I forgot about that. I had...get this...thrips AND whiteflies at the same time. That sucked, then the spider mites moved in...I won. I don't know how but I did!

Should I cut off the two leafs that are dying or do I let them die off on their own?
