Ok so my flower bed is 12ft by 6ft. How much compost would you add to a clay soil?

I would try to add a couple of inches of compost over your area and till or dig it in. Anything is better than nothing but I would say this would be a good start.

Hello,Deirdre, Our soil is awful here in Great Falls, I dig down so far and I come to what looks like coal. So whenever I wanted a flower bed I would make a compost pile. It took a season before I could plant, but the wait was worth it.
Add everthing to your pile, and if its not working, then use store bought chicken or steer manure and work it in.I use my neighbors turkey poop, ...if it does not get hot enough you will have weeds.
I only have to use a liquide ferilizer once in the sprin g to jump start my plants. Kerry

thank you so much. We'll see how it goes. I'm going to be making some raised flower beds. We shall see. It's going to be a long process because of funds
