Can anyone tell me what kind of insect or animal has been pruning pencil size branches from my hickory trees.

It started in August and I was told it was done by praying mantis which I found hard to believe. All the limbs look like a sharpened pencil. Thanks for your response

If this involved oaks in stead of hickories I would be inclined toi agree with Ron. I have never seen cicadas oviposit on hickories. I suspect is is one of the "twig Girdlers" common in the south east and attack pecans and hickories (both genus Carya). Check this out: http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/ent/notes/O&T/trees/ note96/note96.html . Remeber to remove any spaces in your browser the GG editor seems to like adding to web addresses.

Edit: The space is right in front of "note96. Simply delete it after you copy and paste to your browser.
