Can anyone tell me what kind of insect or animal has been pruning pencil size branches from my hickory trees. |

It started in August and I was told it was done by praying mantis which I found hard to believe. All the limbs look like a sharpened pencil. Thanks for your response |

If this involved oaks in stead of hickories I would be inclined toi agree with Ron. I have never seen cicadas oviposit on hickories. I suspect is is one of the "twig Girdlers" common in the south east and attack pecans and hickories (both genus Carya).
