I have planted several different rose bushes, which I have never grown, they have all been blooming great, in my opinion. But I have been reading about spotted leaves as a disease. Please look at these leaves and tell me if this is what everyone is talking about. Thanks.
John

It doesn't seem to bother the blooms. I thought it was just the color of the leaves.

Hey John.

Black spot won't really bother the blooms, but it is unsightly and spreads to your other roses. You want to pick off all the infected leaves, and the ones off the ground also. Try this for a spray, 1 gal water,1tablespoon baking soda and 1 teaspoon cooking oil. hope this helps

Agree with sassmuffin. Also, trim back the flowers which start to die. I see one which slipped by you.

Don't know if anyone knows this or not. Don't plant roses too close to each other. 'Cause there colors start to change!
Don't ask how or why...i wouldn't know. But lots of my roses have changed from there original color.

Beautiful flowers by the way. : )

Edit: almost forgot. See if the water (spinklers or however you water them) touches the leaves. Keep water away from the leaves if possible.

I've just started gardening and had a few old rose bushes on my property. They had the same look to the leaves. This is drastic but a co-worker told me to cut them to ground level..(didn't like this just waited until blooms were gone) I cut it down and they came back with no black spots. Roses don't like their feet wet overnight so I am told to water them if needed in the early morning so they have all day to get comfortable.

Oh and disgard all clippings burn if possible. Your pics are beautiful.

Rashell, do your roses go dormant in CA? I differ with you on cutting all old flowers back and it's probably a regional recommendation. I didn't find out until this year that you should leave the last blooms of the season on if you live in a climate that gets frosts and freezes. When you cut the blooms, it stimulates the rose to keep producing new growth when you want it to go dormant. I'd always trimmed every bloom off before reading that.

You should also leave the last blooms so they can form hips in the fall. My roses don't have hips though so I don't know much about them.

True true sweetlebee...this is one reason why don't give advice about flowers. I forget about different zones. One reason why I said what i said is 'cause supposedly black spots spread to new canes. didn't want the canes getting ruined.

But mostly what I meant by cutting back ...I was talking about that one which is dead. The one lonely one in the pic. Cut back down to maybe 5 leaves. Wasn't talking about cutting it all back. YIKES! Thanks sweetle.

I don't mean pruning the canes either, Rash. I think I read it in the Oregonian and they said not to cut off the last dead roses because it's the same as pinching back your annuals to keep them blooming. I've actually got a group of buds on my rose that didn't get the message though.
