I have some roses that are all bush, and they are 4 or 5 ft tall. Do I need to trim them back? John |

I can give it a try. Looks like you are in Zone 6 or 7, am I right? Pruning should be done at least once a year usually in early spring or fall. I prefer to prune in Spring myself as there is more often than not winter kill anyway. Pruning is done to help keep the plant attractive looking, promotes new growth which encourages flowering. Climbers are a bit different than regular bushes as most grow on old wood. How much you prune depends on the plants individual needs. I have had to prune to the ground due to winter kill and the plant came back same year beautifully. Regular pruning can be anywhere from 1/3- 2/3s of the bush. Either to keep the bush neat or to control black spot or some other rose disease for example. Remember roses like to be fed regularly and watered 1-2 inchs per week. Don't feed during your plants dormant period. Roses need rest also. Hope this helps some. Sass Attachments: ![]() |

http://gardening.about.com/od/rose1/a/RosePruning. htm I don't grow roses. They are too fussy where I live and so many things find them tasty or grow on them. However, you do have to know about the rose plant itself in order to know how to prune them. For instance, do they blossom on old wood or new wood? I would ask the question on a rose forum if I were you.
