I was thinking about putting a picket fence in the front of my yard. Just one the one side, the front.

Is there a place to buy it pretty cheap? I don't want to have to make it myself. I don't have that kind of time and I would probably do a crappy job.

I was wondering also, how far from the road should you put it? I really like the houses that have a fence and then plants growing in front and behind the fence. This is definitely a next year project but I'm getting a plan together.

I also want to get one of those big wooden barrels that are about 2ft tall or so but I have no idea what they are actually called or where to get them.

You might try checking Lowes or Home Depot, or any local lumber store that sells pre-made fence panels. They will usually, from time to time, have an area where they sell their slightly defective panels.
My hubby caught a few picket fence panels on cleareance and realized that the privacy panels were made the same way, so he bought an extra privacy panel and removed every other plank and cut it down to size and the tops of the planks to match and at our last residence, we had a 50'x24' picket fence for about $60.00. These days the pre-made panels might be expensive, but it may prove to be your best bet since you plan on doing just one side.

Btw, make sure to check with your road department before you put up a fence and a garden. In our area, the road depart. claims the first four feet of the property for ditches and road care.

Are you talking about a wooden whiskey barrel? They are usually 50-55 gallons I think. You could use it as a rain barrel to collect extra rain water to water the plants. Most wooden barrels are sawn in half and used as planters or add a pond liner and you can have a water fountain barrel. If you use it for catching rain water and you have mosquitoes, and who doesn't, you will want to a add a product that safely kills the little buggers.

Good luck, Tam

it's like that but I guess it would be half a barrel? It's not for the rainwater though, I was going to put flowers in it

I figured this is what you were talking about. In the spring k-mart has them on sell. You can also get some that are not made of wood but made to look like wood and they are supposed to hold up better to the elements.

I was going to suggest that about the fencing, too. They make vinyl fencing that you don't have to paint and it looks pretty nice.

ok good deal. My tendency is to go to home depot but that's because I don't know all the ins and outs of where to get stuff for cheaper if there is another solution I have time to shop around for that for sure.

You might even look around some places to be torn down. I mention this because there's an empty house in town that has a picket fence around it and I'm not real sure, but they may be taking the house down. They may remodel it though, too. I doubt the fence is in real good shape. It's pretty old, but that just reminded me.
