I got an orchid plant for inside the house. It's lost it's flowers. What do I do now? Do I cut the part where the flowers were? When and how should I repot it? |

Hi! Do you know what kind of Orchid it is? If it's a Phalaenopsis or moth orchid you prune only the top 2 or 3 inches of the stem right at the node. Prune it on an angle. If the stem is all brown you'll have to cut the entire stem off.As far as repoting it, the best time to do this is when your orchid is not blooming. You will want a special orchid bark or orchid moss. I prefer the bark so I let it dry out slightly. The moss stays to wet in my home. They also like humidity so put in on a tray of pebbles with water in the pebbles. Just set the plant on top of the pebbles, not in the water. Or you might be able to purchase humidity trays at your local garden shop.If you need any thing else I'll be happy to help. Patty |

thanks patti! I'll see what I can find. The whole stem is brown now so I'll cut it off. I noticed there are more stems growing out from the side, that's good right? |

Hi again. Yes, the shoots coming out the side are a good sign. Those are roots if they are fat and puffy. They drink in moisture from the air. You can mist them if you want to. The stems for flowers are skinny and have nodes every inch or so. Patty

where do you find the bark for the repotting? I still haven't done it and it needs to get repotting. The roots are definitely overgrown for the pot. Also, what kind of fertilizer should I get for it? How often do you fertilize it? |

Ok I got some orchid potting mix from walmart. We'll see how it does. Wish me luck. I also found this: http://www.orchidweb.com/repotvid.aspx Now I don't know what info is correct and isn't correct but the video really helped me figure out how to do it. I'm a visual person. |

mine is on top of my desk at home. It gets some light. I read they need filtered light and not direct sun light but I'm no expert. |
