hello everyone, i am a very new gardener. i love in new jersey and have spent the past 5 weeks cleaning and tilling out my lawn until it is the cleanest, nicest dirt in all of our area. the trouble is it took us so much longer to prepare the ground, we had no idea, that now i am afraid it is too late to put seed down this weekend and plant a small bed of shrubs. please help! thanks

Hi and Welcome to GG! It is definately not too late to seed your lawn. I am not sure about the shrubs but I suspect it is OK. |

This is the perfect time to plant shrubs, late fall. Just make sure that they hardy. |

Seed needs soil temps of 60-80 degrees to germinate. I seeded in the middle of September and that seed came up. I seeded a few sparse patches a few weeks after that and we went into cool weather a few days later. No signs of that seed sprouting. |

If I were you I would still try to seed the lawn now - it may still warm up again. We've seeded in October and had snow the next day. It warmed up and the grass grew fine. You can then seed again in the Spring. Of course, if you are on a budget (Good grass seed is expensive!) then you could wait until the Spring, but plant early and hope the weather cooperates. It is harder to get a new lawn established when the baby grass has to compete with weeds when it starts warming up. |

thanks. we are going to go for it. this weather has been so unpredictable it can totally warm up again, who knows. and if it doesn't grow, we will re-seed in the spring. any suggestions for a flowering ground cover that can grow around the roots of a huge oak tree? |
