I have some mums that are very tall and leggy - they only get morning sun - do they need more light or could I prune them more severely in June when I am pruning back to encourage more buds?? The first picture is from June of this year, the second is from this week. PS any advice on 'filling out' this bed would be welcome!! It just isn't right.

I would think pinching them back more often would encourage bushier growth. You probably could continue to pinch them back into July too.

They, and you, are exceptional.

Mine gets afternoon sun and it's growing like the dead nettle it's growing in. Along the ground with just it's little bud heads sticking up right now. It's been a perennial for a few years now and I hate to move it.

So what can I put in the middle of a partial shade bed to 'fill in' - The fence is 4' so I'd be looking for something that only gets 2-2.5' tall. Though I have yellow mums in the back, the bed was supposed to be red-orange. Any suggestions??

What about some kind of Trollius (Globeflower)?

Does that have a late bloom time? I was hoping to spark the bed for late summer - fall, it's looking a bit spent...

I don't think so.....

What about some dahlias? My neighbor has some orange ones flowering now.

Marigolds are easy to grow from seed and probably reseed themselves.

Edited to add: those may not grow in part sun.

Maybe there is a later blooming orange daylily - I have Happy Returns, which is yellow still blooming.
