OK...So my husband and I are getting ready to get my gardens in order for the winter. Is it ok to mulch in October?? I have identified more than 30 different plants, trees, and bushes in my 8 gardens all around my house. So I want to be careful that I dont kill anything, but they are all perennials! I would really like some advice. Thanks a lot!!!! |

Here in Oregon (zone 8) they recommend mulching at Thanksgiving. You're supposed to wait until the ground has a light freeze, I believe, and the mulch keeps the ground from thawing. The freeze/thaw cycle is what damages roots, not the freeze. I know in colder regions the snow acts as an insulator. Hopefully someone from closer to you can give you a better idea of when to mulch. Most years we never get a freeze at all, so I just rake all the fallen leaves on my beds and that is enough. |

Check with your local extension office to be sure but I wouldn't think it would hurt anything. Here in the south, stuff grows and bugs live 12 months out of the year, so mulching is pretty much done all the time. Specifically in the spring and fall though, is the heaviest time for mulch.LB |
