Hi, I just found this site and it looks very interesting. We are very avid gardeners even though a lot is trial and error. I am looking forward to learning and sharing with the group. Right now I am just checking around getting used to the site. I am very interested in finding out how to harvest zinnia seeds. I didn't see any info on this site. Can someone tell me where to find that info or which area of the forum to use. Thank you....have a great day. Daisyluv

Welcome to GG, Daisy ~ from West Kentucky! I have about a zillion zinnias in my yard. They make a very nice place to put your eyes along the ugly side of my husband's workshop. The zinnias will make many, many seeds. You just wait until the flowers fade, the petals drop, and the seed heads are all that is left. When this happens, you can very easily pull the seeds off of the seed head. Since they don't overwinter here, I collect the seeds and keep them in a cool dry place, and then sow once the ground warms in spring. Since I have so many seeds, I will be happy to share, but it sounds like you will have some of your own. |

Thank you so much for your welcome and the answer to my question. Yes, it looks like I will have some zinnias for next year. I am also harvesting seed from 4 o'clocks. They are so easy ..they actually jump out at you .We used to grow roses where we lived before but they didn't do well in this yard so we branched out to try a lot of different flowers. It has been so much fun. have a great day! Daisy |

Hello Daisy, Welcome to GG from Lake Greenwood, SC. I am fairly new to this site but have enjoyed meeting gardeners and exchanging information about our gardening passions. Hope to get to know what you enjoy about gardening. Keep those hands dirty, gimlet

Welcome to GG from WI, Daisy! This time of year up here, I'm collecting seeds from as many suspects as possible...nothing like free flowers, all you gotta remember is what's in which envelope! Last count I harvested seeds from four different sites, yesterday being the most interesting, as DH and I were on our way into the library when he looked at a planting outside the door and commented how pretty those purple flowers were (cone flowers). Not having any envelopes on hand, the seeds wound up in the pocket of my jeans. Whatever it takes, right? Anyhow...enought about me. Thanks for joining, and keep digging!

Welcome to GG Daisy from WY. My gazanias are going to seed right now and i'm going to save some. I'm lucky to have them! First weedkiller then grasshoppers. I live in an apartment complex and the guy that sprayed weeds got my flowerbed. If there is any pink blooming the grasshoppers leave the gazanias alone, but they like the yellow and orange after they chomp the pink and purple petunias. So I'm not deadheading anything and see if I can get some seeds. |

Hi, Thank you all for the nice welcome. I am glad that I found this site. Sweetlebee, I am now living in the western part of NY by Lake Ontario but I am from the Lake George area. I plan on going back there in a few years because that is where my whole family is and I miss them. Can anyone tell me the best time to divide Irises. My husband does all the planting and dividing and I do the deadheading and seed gathering. We have tried about every plant in the nursery and are just starting to get the garden areas the way we want them..and wouldnt' you know..they will be perfect when it will be time to move again. I am trying to figure a way to take them with me haha. have a great day. daisy Oh, can you tell me how to add to my friends list, please. |

Dividing irises would be right now, actually maybe a week ago, as you want 'em to get established a bit before the first frost comes (here, that's usually by the end of Sept.) Making Friends is easy...click on their name, that'll take ya to their profile. Then you can click on "Add To Friends" to the right of their avatar (picture). Another screen will pop up asking if you want to ask that person to be your friend (guess sometimes even GGers get cold feet... ) You click on "OK," then that same screen comes up without the Add button. I just asked you to be my friend! On the other person's end, they'll see a button in the "My Friends" area alerting them they have a new friends request, and then they get to either accept or decline that request. You should also get a PM alert that there's a new friend request from me... Hope it works!Hey, Moderators, could we maybe do a sticky on this specific question if we haven't already? I don't mind answering individual members, just figure it would be more efficient that way. I also can't remember what I say each time... Consistency ain't my middle name, that's for certain!
