Hi all. I am new to this board and new to gardening. I am hoping to get enough seeds ready to try a variety of veggies and herbs and have a good selection of perennials to plant along with some annuals next year. I would also like to try growing my own garlic, but don't yet know how to start....but I haven't read all the boards yet either....I'm sure I'll find lots of info there. I've heard to use grocery store garlic and I've heard that it's a waste of time to use what you buy in the grocery store...but it's pretty expensive other places I've looked. Anyone know of an inexpensive source? I don't even know if I want hard neck or soft neck, so I sure don't know what varieties I want. lol. We live on a corner unfenced lot and have about 2/3-3/4 of an acre. I have a huge side yard, a good size backyard, and a decent front yard. I have been married to hubby for a little over 5 years. I have a married daughter, a middle school stepson, and a 3 year old grandaughter. She is going to be a big sister in January to 2 younger siblings. We don't know yet what the twins are, but so far everything looks good and they are developing healthy, so that is all that truly matters. I tried a little gardening this year, but the ground was new and weeds were prolific....and with the heat we had, who could maintain new ground? Not me! But I have not given up and will try again next year with better planning and hopefully better cooperation from Mother Nature. I work in a hospital as a LPN and have been there a long time. I'm into my 18th year now. My fav place to go on vacation is anywhere that a cruise ship takes me. And I can talk all night about cruising, so don't get me started! I'm thinking about getting one of those little plastic greenhouses but haven't convinced myself that it would help get seedlings ready in the spring. Again, I need to visit boards. There aren't any strangers out here, just friends I haven't met yet, and I'm looking forward to hours and hours of fun with you all. Carol B |

Welcome to GG from WI, Carol! I've grown garlic from the stuff available in the stores, and while it isn't as productive as the more expensive sets, you do get some results. It's also a hit or miss proposition, as some of it simply never grows much at all. Every year I think about ponying up the $ for some actual sets...every year I spend that money on flower bulbs! Thanks for joining, and feel free to dig around a while. ![]() PS "There's always next year!" is the mantra for many of us 'round here... |

Welcome, Carol ~ from another Z6b, western KY! I am only 20 miles from the TN border and have been to Paris and Nashville a time or three. Our Master Gardening class is making a visit to Cheekwood Botanical next month. You're going to like it here at GG. It's a neat little site with many wonderful and helpful members. |

Welcome from Ohio! There's lots to see around here so I'm sure you'll get some great ideas. I'm not sure if the garlic question should go in the Herb section or the Vegetable though! lol Pick one and I'm sure you'll get some responses. |
