How do you keep snails away from lettuce? I've tried trapping snails with beer but didn't catch a single snail. I also bought environment-friendly snail pellets, but they broke down very quickly.

Has anyone tried copper barriers? What is the least toxic way to avoid them?

Is your snail problem over?

Diatomaceous earth - it's a powdery substance, but to slugs it's lethal or at least a good repellent. Diatoms are tiny sea creatures with a mineralized shell, and I think the rough edge repels the soft-bodies slugs. You sprinkle it around the base of the plants - I think of it like garlic to a vampire (it IS close to Halloween!)

I saw some at the garden centre - will try the diatomaceous earth and the rolled up newspaper. Thanks for the advice!

I had slugs this past summer so I have my eyes open for all suggestions on how to rid my garden of them. I haven't tried this idea but came across it - crushed eggshells sprinkled around your plants. I will definitely give it a try and hope it works! Debbie in IL

Have you tried using Crab Shell ? Slugs can't stand the stuff, I have heard great reviews. www.organicgardengrower.com offers a good deal on it.

Go to the grocery store with 75cents and buy a container of salt. Take the salt back to your plant and make a ring around it a few feet from the stalk.
