Preparing soil for next year

The patch of soil has never been used, and was under some debris till now. I picked up a shovel and loosen up the soil, mixing in the weeds (I intend on doing that tomorrow as well) I was wondering if there's anything I should do before next summer? You might want to do something to keep the weeds from growing again come spring (and of course there are winter weeds around here in zone 8) Do you have access to free mulch? Or leaves from your own yard? I think I would try the layers of newspaper and put mulch on top of them to keep unwanted plants from growing there.
