I am establishing thyme between my patio paving stones, and grasses keep plopping themselves where I have already weeded by hand. This has got to stop! Are there any chemical weeders that thyme won't be killed by???

bummer. I think I bulged a disk earlier this summer trying to get the rest of the patio planted in thyme, and now that I look back to where I've worked, there are tons of stupid crab grass popping up! weeds s*%#! |

Oh, crab grass? That's good news! You can use a pre-emergent on it early next spring. |

Won't that kill the thyme, too? Everyone warns me not to use the crabgrass pre-emergent near flower gardens...but I have crabgrass in them too! |

'bout time you answered! J/k! All I know about the pre-emergents is that it's the only way to prevent crabgrass. Pre-emergents will kill any seed, so if you're growing flowers from seed at the same time, it'd kill them. When do you seed--around Memorial Day? You treat for crabgrass earlier than that so how long will crabgrass pre-emergent affect seeds? I don't know either! If there's something in pre-emergent that's bad for flowers, then there's corn gluten meal too. It's an all natural weed-n-feed. However, I learned this year that it may not work on crabgrass or it may take 2-3 years to see good results. Which is true, I don't know, so let's hope someone has the facts! |

WEll, if the preemergent doesn't work around the flower bed (it won't hurt established plants from the sound of it) then I can always just kill everything once they are growing - I have some sort of pernicious weed in one bed between my and my neighbor's driveways...As for the thyme, I cut growing plants, stick them in the dirt and they root! So I don't have to depend on them seeding, so I am going to try it on the area that sill needs thyme planted to prevent new grasses...Thanks again Sweetlebee! |

If you can get some "Vantage" it may work. Its been some time since I've read the label but it may be helpful. I've used it on lots of beds b4 an it only killed the unwanted weeds/grasses. I've never used it on thyme b4 though. Farm supply stores usually have it. |
