Hello All!
I am new to the forum as well as gardening. I just started an herb garden about 3 weeks ago. My Cilantro is growing out of control. I have researched online and read that you can freeze some herbs. However, there is no mention of Cilantro. The only way that I can find to store ciliantro is to put the stems in a cup full of water and wrap it in plastic in the refrigerator which will only preserve them for 1 week. I hear it's difficult to dry them too. Does anyone have advice on how I can preserve all of the extra cilantro I have?
Thanks!
Sarah

Cilantro and corinader are basically the same thing. Maybe if you locate one it will have the other, too.
I grew a couple plants one year and I had a hard time with the smell so I didn't do much of anything with it.

The only thing that I have done to uses up my Cilantro is to make up a green or red salsa. It will keep in the refer for days because of the vinegar in the salsa.

I dried mine in my dehydrator just fine/ I only dried the leaves taking off as much stem as I can and did it out doors as it does have a strong scent. then put in bag and sealed it.

Hi, I have found that I can preserve the flavor of cilantro by combining the leaves and olive oil in a food processor and freezing. You can measure a teaspoon or so portions and place on wax paper in the freezer. When frozen place in a canning jar or plastic bag. Then use as needed. This method retains the fresh flavor very well.

the smell of cilantro use to bother me as well when I worked at a b&b we used it to make taco salad and I chopped it so much I can't live without it now:
Easy salad
bag of your favorite salad
cilantro - pull the leaves off and toss in
tomatoes
cheddar cheese
green onions
serve with chicken or beef & tortillas with fresh salsa
yummy for your tummy!

My mom washes it, dices it up & put it in the freezer. She uses it for cooking. But if anyone doesn't want to freeze the extra you can always give it to me? I'll eat it all. Yum! My favorite way to eat it is straight up or with bread! I can't have enough of it.
But I can't grow it! I tried but the plant died.

It's mainly used in Mexican and Thai cooking, shiuko. You'll have to look up some recipes!

I used to think it tasted like soap, but it does grow on you. I can't imagine salsa without it. I always throw most of the bunch into the compost, so I'll have to try the oil method. Thanks for the tip!

Sarah,
I grow cilantro every year because we make a LOT of salsa, last year we had such an abundant crop that I decided to try & dry it. I tied a bunch together just like any other herb & hung it on my drying rack let it air dry with NO SUN, it turned out to be ok, but not as good as the rest of the herbs. It still has a good taste to it but nothing like the real thing. I used it on some homemade salsa the night of the superbowl & it was a big hit, so I guess its ok that way. I personally am going to try the olive oil method too as I do that with a bunch of herbs anyway. We love our bread with olive oil & garlic.
Good luck to you.
