This past weekend, my family and I visited a topiary garden in Newport , Rhode Island when we came across this unusual ( at least to me and my family) insect. It was relatively large ( the size of a hornet), colorful ( green, brown, orange and black). It acted similarly to a humming bird, flying from flower to flower and often hovering in one spot. Thanks in advance, larry Attachments: ![]() |

Certainly is. I tried to post some pictures of a pair of them in my lavender colored bee balm, but I can't get pictures to post here for some reason. They're cool looking. I think those are called clearwings if I remember right. |

Yes, it is a clearwing. They are very cool. As we were looking at it, my wife was insisting that it was a hummingbird, and because if its behavior I had to do a few double takes before I convinced myself it was an insect. Im just hoping I can attract some to my garden. larry |

Here's the few shots I tried to post the other day. There's 2 in a couple of the shots and a bumblebee. I haven't seen the moths since that day. My husband had one buzz him at his sister's and he swatted at it because he thought it was a bee. He had never seen anything like it either. Attachments: ![]() ![]() ![]() |
