Hello, I have a young Washington Hawthorn tree (approx 6 feet tall sapling) that I got from a gardeners' exchange. It has been growing well, having been in our yard ~15 months, but recently some branches have been swelling/fattening and getting some white/yellow root-like growths coming out of the swelling areas... I am not familiar with what mature examples of this tree look like, but my first reaction and lasting thought is that this is a fungus of some sort. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I can post photos if that would help identify the problem, if it is a problem. Many thanks, Emily Bloomington, IN |

Well, after doing some research, it has become clear that my Washington Hawthorn has cedar-quince rust. I didn't know anything about this fungus, but found some helpful information on a webpage produced by Kansas State University's Dept. of Plant Pathology. (KSU photo attached -- looks just like my poor tree!) I don't have the time, energy or money to devote to the applications of fungicides that they recommend, so I suppose I will replace it with something more disease-resistent. I got the Wash. Hawthorn at a plant exchange (for free) and was enticed by the promise of berries that would attract cedar waxwings... Alas!
