Ive grown basil successfully - - whoopie!! but apparently - i the past few weeks I think ive been sharing them with some worms -- or i dont know what -- Ive had ten pots with just the stem sticking out with no more leaves --all eaten. At first I was able to scout out those hairy itchy worms --lurking around -- just spalt and killed them -- but sometimes I dont see any except my basi leaves all eaten up. What is the best way to get rid of these things eating my plants wtihout going through chemical stuff? Someone suggested soapy water to be sprayed on the leaves .. is that okay? |

Sounds like my basil! If it only the worms you would have basil just full of holes. I hand pick them when I see holes. When they get eaten to soil my guess it is those 4-legged creatures with antlers! When I don't get around spraying with garden safe deer repellant they come around and have a nice snack. |

thanks for reply but more than the holes I have the ends of the leaves eaten by something -- dont knwo what it is. I dont see them - except for those thick, hairy crawling things. Ive had pots die a slow death because of that. |

i got it... a gardener who sells basil and other plants suggested laundry soap and water to spray... works -- plants are healthier.. but its been raining here in the Philippines and my basil are exposed.. just how much water can these plants take? I have them on individual pots. |

If they are too wet and you pick them up out of the pot, look at the root system. If it is still whitish to light brown, you are good. If they are getting dark brown or black, you have root rot and need to treat them. I use a product called superthrive. It cured my half dead plant of root rot. It has more than 50 vitamins in it and super effective on close to dead plants without chemicals. Even my starter plants with little root systems thrive on this and I have never had a problem with them since. I bought it at walmart for $3.88 per bottle and plan to get more. |

Root rot! Yes but i can only conclude that when they have stopped growing adn eventually wither--- I was told its not good to keep touching the roots.. true? So are you suggesting that I remove them from pots and change soil when that is the case? Oh and how come the stem of the other plants ( barely a foot in heigth) have turned brown and woody? Isnt this too soon for such small basil? IVe been pinching to generate good stems. |

crushed eggshells get rid of slugs and other worms. They are easier to crush if they are dry. Copper does it to. just put some copper on a metal stick and put the stick in your garden (soil). Don't know if that will help. |
