Hi everyone, I have been here about a month. Been reading lots of blogs and getting to know a few people. I am in the northeastern part of Indiana, zone 5. Have been gardening off and on for several years. I have always wanted a cottage garden, but don't know quite how to go about it. I have started a rock garden. Have been working on it off and on. Mostly has rocks and some flowers, but I'm stuck as to what kind of plants to put in it. Gardening this year has been awful!!!! We had lots of rain in March, then a warm up in April for a few days. Then we had SNOW on April 15. All the flowers and trees got a hard freeze. And now we are having a drought. Well, maybe not a drought, but lack of rain. The grass has turned brown, and most of my flowers are withering on the stems. The only thing doing any good is the Trumpet Vine, which has taken over my garden!!!! Well I guess that's enough into about me. Looking forward to talking to everyone. Take Care!! Attachments: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Welcome (kinda) to GG, splummer! (I say kinda because you're kinda new here... ) I feel your pain in the gardening department, just came in from pretending to mow the crispy lawn...crabgrass is about all I'm mowing! Yup, I thought it was around the 15th that we had that 6-8" snowfall 'round here! I lost the year's tulips and dafodils and anything else that was up. Then when we'd accepted the tulip-less front yard, in came the furry varmints...then the Japanese Beetles, oh, and did I mention the rain that we finally got along with 50 mph winds? What did I do to displease the garden goddess? I've sacrificed my tulips, dafodils, hostas, sunflowers, and basil...now what? OK, enough whining...there's still enough to keep me busy. And there's always next year! So, welcome and no, we don't usually whine this loudly...

mbuirtue, Yea, Crab Grass is about all that's growing here, too. Well, the Trumpet Vine is growing really good. Nothing seems to bother it too much. The pictures I posted with this intro was from last year. Because everything this year has gone to pot. And if you can't whine here, where else. LOL Thanks for commenting. Take care!!Sherrie |

Yup, you're right about the going to pot part as well as the whining...being able to vent here saves my hubby and son the agony.

Welcome to GG splummer! My flowerbed was bombarded by hail, then 4" of rain while I was on vacation. My honey said the flowers were floating away and he was putting them back in the ground as fast as he could. It's not the way I planted it but it sure is beautiful now. We're back in drought season now and on water restrictions. Since we are an even address we can only water Weds. Fri. and Sunday. I thought I was going to lose my pink lobelias so I cheated and gave them a drink today. Temps are in the triple digits, 106 yesterday and supposed to get to 105 today, which means it will be higher than that. The weatherbug is never right. |

Poeticpeony, Yes I am a zone 5. I would like to have some plants I see on the internet, but they are out of my zone. So don't think I'll try it. Thanks for the welcome. Take Care!! Sherrie |

Well Mare460, Our temps aren't that bad. Mostly 85 to 90 degrees with 50 to 75% humidity. Which makes the high temps even worse. Everything in the garden is burning up unless you water every day. We aren't on any water restrictions here where I'm at, but some other cities further south of me are on water restrictions. Thanks for the reply. Take Care!! Sherrie |

Another Zone 5 member... My garden is getting blasted by the heat too and the grass has definitely browned. I only water specific plants that need help as the cost of watering is so high (city water). Besides who has the time to water each night? Not me. So some stuff is doing okay and some is crisping up. Welcome to the group. Tina |
