please help....I'm new to this and my thumbs are still "yellow". I'm trying to grow lawn grass. It started fine. I removed all weeds, tilled the soil. Planted seed and watered until they ppped and started to grow grass. It was nice and beautifully green. Then my husband purchased a lawn mower when it ws high enlugh to cut and he not only cut the grass damp, but also I believe too ,low. It started to turn yellow and dry and brttle after about a week and now it has all turned sort of straw like (hay,, if you will) and I am totally deviistated. I can't understand what happened. everyone was complimenting us, now nobudy says a work. I'm sure their all wondering what happened to the grass ----- and so am I. Please I'm desperate. I've been on line trying to find the reason. Then discouvered this Garden Guides.com and I immediately joned. Here is hoping to a long and lasting connection with green thumbers and wish to be greenthumbers (like me). Though, I luv this gardening, plants and flowers. I am disheartened and can't bare to think about starting over. Will the grass regrow from underneath the hard yellowed grass. Sincerely eyeluvgrass2 |

Now you got it! A healthy sense of humor, too...you'll fit right in. I just wish everyone were around who's usually here, you'd get a better idea of how much fun this can be. Great advice, too by the way.

It was probably the result of cutting it too short, hot temperatures, and not enough water. Grass needs a lot of water to survive the hot summer, at least an inch a week. Water deeply once or twice a week so it really soaks down to the roots. Cut grass 2 1/2-3 inches tall to help shade the roots. Never cut off more than 1/3 of the grass blade at one time as it stresses the plant. At this point it's probably gone dormant for the summer. Pray for some good thunderstorms! |
