Possibly a stupid question. Is it best to pick gourds when they have reached their mature size and color? or do I have to wait until the vine dies before harvesting them ?? larry |

"Since gourds consist of 90 percent water when they're green, picking too early will cause shriveling. Evaluate the stem of a gourd to determine if it has reached full maturation. If the stem has begun to shrivel and turn brown and dry, then the gourd has finished growing and is ready to harvest; it's no longer receiving any nutrients. " This is an excerpt from http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/gardening/article/0,,HGTV _3546_1376059,00.html I hope that helps! Be careful when you start cutting and cleaning the insides. Everything I've seen warns about the dust and mold inside so use care.
