I planted some nasturtium seed in a 11 " hanging basket. I put 11 seeds in it and all 11 are growing. Do I have too many plants in the basket? The plants are about 1" apart. |

I haven't personally grown nasturtiums, but I would say 11 seeds in an 11 inch pot is too many - they will most likely not grow well at all because they are too crowded. Each seed probably will need about 4 to 6 inches or so spacing to grow well. |

Thank you for answering so quickly !! So now what should I do? I read somewhere that nasturtiums don't transplant well. I would hate to throw away the other plants...any suggestions? |

I had some volunteers in my flower bed and I moved some into a hanging basket and moved others to where I wanted them and they are doing just fine. I did the same thing last year and had good success. I can post a picture of the one in the hanging basket if you want. Tina |

I agree with Janetsfamily - I fell in love with nasturtiums a few years ago by accident - there are two types - the low bushy type or the climbing type. If you have the climbing type, which would be great in a hanging basket, I'll bet only three in an 11" pot would be fine. DO NOT FERTILIZE - they will give you great leaves but may not flower well...did you know you can eat nasturtium flowers? throw them in salad for a little spice! I'm mad this year because I didn't get any variegated leaved ones, and I'm on a budget, so it'll have to be next year! |

thank you for the pictures, they are so pretty. My husband's Aunt gave me the seeds and told me that they were easy to grow ( good for 1st timers like me ) Here are some pictures of her nasturtiums growing in her garden this year..( she is the "Martha Stewart" of our family ) She can grow, cook, sew, you name it, she does it and does it to perfection !! Very pretty. I have some in a grass hanging basket, but the soil is the fertilized type. I don't know if mine will flower or not. My snapdragons have tons of leaves, but they aren't blooming much at all either. |
