Hi Greenthumbz, I would suggest that you purchase a bird of paridise plant rather than trying to start from seeds. I went to Hawaii, bought bop seeds...... planted them and not one of them grew. I did however collect stray seeds while taking a walk (thought the plants were cool) and planted those seeds too..... well, I didn't get too many to grow. But I did get a monkey pod tree, it's now 8' and in my kitchen for the Winter. I had to e-mail a photo to the University of Hawaii..... to be identified.... lol My mother in law went to Hawaii and brought back a bird of paradise plant. It will take about 10 years to bloom Sorry to write so much.... lol Kratz7 |

That's pretty cool that you have a monkey pod tree in your kitchen! You could put a few toy dinosaurs under it and pretend it's Jurassic Park. |

Six years ago I was browsing the seed at a local farm store. I came across some "bird of paradise" seed, which I purchased. There were 5 seeds in the pack and the cost was $3.50. I took them home in the late winter and started them by the recommended istruction on the seed pack. One of the seeds germinated in approximately 60 days while another one germinated in 120 days. I gave up on the remaining seeds and tossed them. I took the more vigorious of the two plants and gave it the attention that was needed to bring it to flower. The plant bloomed in late November of 2007. During the summer the plant was set outside until the night time temperatures started to drop, during the month of September. I'm not sure what I will do with the plant for the next step, since my understanding that the carrot like roots can be divided at some point. The pot the plant is contained in is abouit 18 inches deep with a slight taper going to the floor; and about 16 inches in diameter at the top. |
