I am planting my first vegetable garden. The plot is 20x30 feet (actually I have 40 acres but thought I would start small and work my way up to a couple acres) with sun all day long. I will be planting sweet corn, onions, scallions, tomatoes, carrots, radishes, chives, peppers, cantelope, watermelon, lettuce, cabage, squash, dill, zuccini, beets, cucumbers and broccoli for starters. Any pointers or tips would be appreciated. I would like to keep it organic. Regards Tom |

Welcome to GG!! Glad to have you, I dream of having acres and acres to plant. Good soil or amending the soil so it is better seems to be one of the most important things to start with.

Welcome to Garden Guides! I definitely agree with AngelsGarden that starting out with good soil makes an important difference. Plus being sure that things get adequate water. |

Welcome from South-Central WI! I would also think about getting the soil tested, so you know what you're up against, or so you know it's perfect and you can dive right in. University Extensions are also an invaluable source of local info. Have fun, and you're right to pace yourself, that's a lot of dirt you've got!

Welcome from Statesboro, GA, Home of Georgia Southern University. Glad to have you. I have a 20 x 20 garden. Right now I have okra, squash, cantalopes, zuchini, tomatoes and cukes. Really struggling to keep it watered. One tomato is turning red. Hope I can get it before the birds do. |

Wow thanks for all the warm welcomes. I have bought a soil test and show I am about 6.5 PH so I am slightly acidic. But should be in the proper range unless I read the ph guides wrong. I think it read 6-7 ph should be good. Thanks Tom

Any plans for blueberries? I was going to try some this year but got scared off by the "takes two to five years to bear fruit..." Now I've read (elsewhere in GG, I think) that you can get some the next year! Good to hear the soil's ready, dive in and get muddy BTW, are you a yuuper, or over by Petosky area? I went to Petosky when young, have very vivid memories of the "summer homes", and lived in the Green Bay area so have lotsa friends up there still, ya know? Ya der hey!!
