My name is tangieswain and I live in Chicago, the midwest. I have been growing my veggie garden about 2 1/2 months now. I started from seeds in my apartment. There are greens and melons and peppers and all types of good things, but I just don't know when to start harvesting some of them. My collards look just like the ones you buy from the store. I also have some garlic and it just doesn't look like it is doing any thing at all. Any advice or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!

If the Collards look the ones you have purchased and used before you can go ahead and harvest. What kinds of melons and peppers? Cantaloupe is an easy one for me, if you think one is ready or want to test one I just put a little pressure on the stem right where it connects to the melon. If it pops right off then its ready.

A little trick I learned about mellons. As the frut develops & begins to ripen, put a piece of scrap wood underneath it & turn your fruit daily. This avoids it getting mushy on one side & keeps the fruit out of the moisture in the dirt. Of course that's if your mellons are growing on the ground. If they're staked, I have read of folks using knee-highs to support them.

Good luck,
Ann
