Attracting Baltimore Orioles

We just got our first Baltimore Oriole in the last few weeks. To my amazement they came to my suet feeder. I make my own suet and he loved it. After we saw him I put out the grape jelly and the 1/2 oranges, he didn't touch the stuff. Then one day it rained and it became a grape water mixture.
He is at the bowl all the time and my other birds and squirrels drink it also (I have a orange colored short glass bowl that it is in)
So, suet and grape water (grape jelly diluted in water) and they will come!!!

Suet recipe:
If you want to you can mix 1/2 suet and 1/2 lard for this recipe:
1 cup suet or lard
1 cup crunchy peanut butter
2 cups “quick cook” oatmeal
2 cups yellow cornmeal
1 cup all purpose flour
1/3 cup sugar

Welcome! We're glad to have you with us.

I wish that I had seen this yesterday. I was washing out a jar of grape jelly, which had some left in it. I could have just stirred it up with a little water, put it out and have seen what happened. That would be like Rachel Ray's "bottom of the jar" concoctions except it would have been "for the birds." Alas, I didn't, but I will the next time!

I had many more Orioles this summer (2009) we got the feeder up early. But they seem to have already left my area in early September. Any rules of thumb on when they migrate? It has been a pretty cool summer here in SE Michigan and I didn't know if that was a contributing factor or not. The Orioles seem to be gone, but our hummers are still here in force.

I don't know what the deal is with oriole south migration. I had nine of them visit my feeder on the way north in spring/early summer, but only three on the way back south. Because of all the juveniles, there are a lot more hummingbirds during the fall migration. Ditto for goldfinches. Heck, there are more of just about everything. I would love to know why I never saw any young orioles.
