Woohoo!!! Just when I thought I would never see an oriole, I was walking by my patio door and there it was, chomping away at the orange slice I put out. I have an upside down orange cup with grape jelly, too, but this oriole only ate the orange. It did not take long for it to clean out this orange slice. I hope he brings some friends. Maybe now I should go ahead and buy the $10 hanging feeder shown in justme's photo.

I haven't seen the oriole today, but he obviously stopped by. I just checked the new orange slice I put out and it has been fully eaten. This means the oriole has been sticking around for at least the last five days.

UPDATE: I just put out another fresh orange slice and two minutes after I went back into the house the oriole was feasting on it.

He still hasn't touched the grape jelly.

I just saw something wild. After eating more orange, the oriole hopped up onto the deck. He then flew into the sliding door window, although thankfully not very hard. Once more, he jumped and flapped his wings trying to go through the window. Now, here's the best part. He hopped up and clamped onto the bottom of the window and just stared into the house for 30+ seconds... and with my face only a foot away from him. I've never seen anything like it. He later came back and tried to fly into the house again.

The bird must have seen something it wanted.

Here's a picture of one that found my suet feeder. I never saw an oriole on the suet before.

It appears the oriole that had been hanging out in my yard for the last week has moved elsewhere. He had been making several visits each day to eat the orange I put out, but a couple days ago I was doing yard work for much of the day and he didn't have much opportunity to come to the patio and eat. My long presence must have scared him away for good.

I saw my first oriole last year and this year, there are many of them. One is nesting in a tree by my deck and keeps trying to pull threads from my outdoor rug. I find it amazing how "non-skittish" they are.

We have orioles coming to our hummingbird feeders. I have two hummingbird feeders and an oriole feeder. They prefer the red hummingbird feeders to the orange oriole feeder. We also have a large garden area by the feeders with a large variety of flowers. We have two males and two females. I haven't seen hummingbirds yet, just the orioles. The hummingbird feeders are much easier for me than the grape jelly.

I also heard, don't know it ist true, we were told that if you start feeding them and they come back and find you have ran out of jelly or what ever they WON"T come back that same year. So we MAKE SURE we never run out of goodies for them.

Anyone who owns this feeder... have you had any problems with bees going after the nectar?
