Is there anything I can put down to get rid of carpenter ants and ticks in my shade garden? I just started this garden, before is was basicly a junk pile. I cleaned all the junk out and killed all the weeds before planting anything. But I can't go in there without getting covered with ticks and the ants are all over the place. We have an ant and tick problem all over the yard but in this one spot it's worse than anywhere else.

I would go talk to someone at my homestore. I think you will have to have two different kind of help. Both come in granules so they shouldn't hurt you plants.Ants are no problem there are lots of new products on the market for them but they also make some stuff for fleas and ticks (not sure of the name).

I sprinkle wood ash around the house and on anthills to keep the ants away they don't like the stuff. Also use borax, works like a charm.

Don't know about ticks.

Use a wood burning stove, which is in the basement. One year I could not use the stove and the following summer ants were all over the house. My guess that some of the residual smoke, which comes out of the box when I open the door, smoke goes throughout the house and the ants don't like the smell. So far this year not one ant in the house.

Thanks I'll check at the garden center. About the wood ash. Does it have to be fresh wood ash? We might have a bucket in the basement from the last time the woodstove was cleaned, but it's at least 2 years old. We haven't used the woodstove in a long time.
