Hey everyone I am a 2nd. year Gardener and I am growing Cucumbers,Cayenne peppers, jalapeno peppers and of course several varieties of tomato. I usually water them every evening and they seem to be doing well. I was wondering if I may be watering them to often. And could someone tell me a easy way to fertilize my garden. I throw some fertilizer on the soil every few weeks before I water. I am pretty sure this isnt the right way. So I would appreciate anybodys advice and wisdom. Thanks Johnny

It would depend on how hot it is there but that may be a little too often. The more experienced (than me) people around here say that watering deeply less often will make for deeper roots. Depending on how often it rains I have only been watering 2 times a week and its been reallllly hot here. As for the fertilizer I just put it around the base of the plants, not too close to the stem, then scratch it in with a sm. hand rake. Oh, and it is recommended to water in the early morning not at night, its been so hot here though I sometimes cheat and water in the evening.

Alright thank you for your help. I live in Baltimore,MD and it stayss rather hot and humid, with not mcu rain other then the occasional fast moving thunderstorm. But Im going to try your approach and slack off on the daily waterings. Im just going to keep an eye on the plants while Im trying this new watering method. Thanks again. Johnny

I don't fertilize at all...well, ok, I sprinkle Epsom Salt then water it in I try to water in the morning but sometimes if it has baked for the day I will water at night. I agree on the trying not to water too much as the roots do get deeper otherwise, but sometimes you have to water more often....in that case I try to give a little in the evening and a bit in the morning...more of a tease than anything and hope for rain!

Hmmm? I wonder if I'm doing it right. I have snaked a soaker hose throughout my plot & have attached a fertilizer bottle. I have a timer on my hose so that every morning at 8:30 it waters for 30 minutes. Once a week I add a packet of Miracle Grow to the fertilizer bottle. Of course on days that I get rain, I don't bother wasting the water. I'm in VA so I get the same glide-by thunderstorms. I guess my method is working cuz everything's growing like crazy & flowering like crazy too.

Hugs,
Annie

Hey hey, I'm not quite sure how to deal with garden plots. All my plants are in pots. It seems to me that they need to be watered everyday. The soil always looks dry. Every 14 days I put some miracle grow in my watering can and water away. I found that it also helped when I added some crushed Tums to the soil of my tomato plants.

I live in NC and its hot and we are in a drought. I water a few times a week. And as for fertilizer I use fish emulshion every 3 weeks. My veggies look great and taste good too. Since you are growing cucumbers make sure the ground is evenly moist otherwise mis-shaped bitter tasteing cucumbers could result.
