I think it may have borers down near the ground. How can I prevent that from happening to the cherry tree I planted this spring? What causes it?

I went to the local nursery about it. Their "tree expert" talked to me, but I got the impression he didn't know much about cherry trees.

I don't know if anyone is reading this thread but I have pictures now. The trunk is oozing sap and I don't know what that fissure is at the base.

You should ask Treeman if he might know. It's GG tradition that you offer strawberry shortcake to attract his attention.

I'll get right to work on that! Oops! Have to put the eggs back.

If you fry them up with some bacon, he might smell it cooking and get here sooner.

There are about 3 or 4 different borers that will attack cherries. All are difficult to control by spraying. Trying to maintain vigor will help as the tree won't be as vulnerable. This is done by fertilizing and supplimental waytering when it gets dry.

The pics look like you may have a poor graft union, which will contribute to low vigor and increased vulnerability to borers. If this is the case then I doubt you can doo much for the tree ans the graft becomes a bottle neck inhibiting the upward flow of moisture in the xylem and the downward flow of sugars in the sap. Poor unions are usually the result of poorly matched root stock and scion tissues (genetic).

Thank you so much, treeman. I have a new cherry tree that I don't want to go the same route. I'm going to talk to my husband about an inground sprinkler system again.

What type of fertilizer do you recommend and do I spray the tree with oil?

My neighbor found some grubs that she thinks grow up to be root borers they they were about 1.5 inches long and 1/2 inch wide and they crawled. Gave me the willies!!!!
