I have never grown eggplant before. Do they need a cage like tomatoes or will they grow without any support?

I am growing eggplant this year for the first time also. I had the same question and have tried to find information about that. The only thing that I read that referred to that said that when the eggplants get tall and have fruit on them you may want to stake them so if there is heavy winds they don't fall over. Mine are just starting to open their flowers so I will have to stake them soon.

Eggplants will most certainly have to be staked.

Once the fruit gets large, the plants will most of the time fall over.

Thanks Ed, I did stake the largest ones. I will finish doing the rest of them just as soon as I get some more stakes. Really don't want to lose them now.
