What do I need to do to produce more fruit on my strawberry plants?? I recently bought 2 plants from Meijer and right now they don't have flowers or fruit. How can I speed up the growth?

Also, what is the best thing for keeping the animals away from them? I am growing them inside a retaining wall along my porch.

What kind of strawberries are they?

June Bearing, Everbearing, Alpine, or Musk strawberries?

Did you get them bare root or were they potted?

It is kind of late in the season for many types of strawberries. Day length can have a big impact on strawberry production.

Sometimes cutting back runners can help fruit production.

I've been wondering the same thing about my strawberry plants. I bought them in small containers about a month ago and replanted them in large containers (18"). One plant has gotten super huge, about 10-12" in diameter, but not one bud. Oh, and they are everbearing "fragaria x annassa" (sp?) I cut 2 runners off this morning. One of the other plants has only gotten to be about 6" but it got one blossom on it that has turned into a a tiny green strawberry.

What are your thoughts about this situation? I planted them with moisture control miracle grow potting soil. ( I replied to another of your posts also.)

Thanks

I don't know about that veriety but I have June bearing. We planted last year and we cut all the blooms off. That was what we were told to do. It was to grow healthier plants. Update: I planted 3 strawberry bushes. Now I have to thin them out they are so thick no sun can get thru. We've had excellent berries but we probably have 50 plants now.

Butterfly, by thinning them out, do u mean, u took out whole plants and thus reduced the total number, or do u mean that you trimmed off certain individual leaves on individual plants? I have one plant in a pot which has gotten quite BIG with big leaves. It has finally developed some buds, but they are under the leaves, and I am wondering if the sun will be able to get to them to open them up, etc.

I am going to try just to split the plants. I can't have enough strawberry plants. I think in the fall I can just dig them up and seperate them.

Our strawberry plants seem to only want to send out runners instead of bearing fruit. We have approximately 50 plants that are all around three years old (meaning this is their third growing season). Only about eight plants fruited in June and only two plants are bearing now. A number of the plants are quite large and look like they have two to three sections.

My husband is the one who planted the strawberries, but this summer he can't care for them so I am. I am constantly cutting back runners. Is there anything else we can do to make the plants fruit more? Any suggestions would be very welcome!

Can anyone update this post? I am wondering the same thing but there aren't any answers. Thanks!
