Squirrels...

My mother lives about an hour outside of Charlotte, NC on a lake. She is having a horrible time with squirrels. She will plant something in a container on the dock and two hours later the squirrels dig it up. She tried Caynne (msp) pepper last year on a couple plants but it killed the plants. Does anyone have any suggestions? And no killing the squirrels in any way, shape or form is not an acceptable way of dealing with the situation! Have you used something that worked? Thanks, Dirtyhands! |

Well, if she lives on a lake live trapping them and releasing them someplace else would probably be pointless. Could she put a cage of some sort around the plants or put some corn or other tasty tidbits elsewhere in the yard away from her plants? That's a tough one. |

Any more suggestions on this topic? I want to know too. Edit: I remember reading (@GG) about squirrels and other pests but don't remember who started the subject & where it was posted. Does anyone know where the post is? I think Ronsgarden had a few tips & others did too. Lots of info! Ronsgarden? Sweetlebee? Anyone?

http://my.gardenguides.com/forums/topic/14335 I searched and found it in OTGF. It's the one where Ron talks about covering his containers with mesh. What was it doing in OTGF? I'm moving it to this forum! |

It's here now, on page 3, but use the link--I tested it. When we move threads, it puts them in chronological order and that was from last April. Thanks, Rashy! That was a perfect example of why we need to post in the correct forums. I'm not sure we get everything when we use the search function, but try that. I looked and looked for an old thread about lobelia for joybells and could never find it. I ran across it yesterday buried in General Garden Discussion. The person had spelled the thread title "Labelia". |

thank you sweetle I want to read about it as much as possible! I'm told it's time to plan ahead for a veggie garden! Soooooo, i'm planning! Keeping ground squirrels away is #1 on my list of plans! I know there is more on the subject & I agree we should post in the right place. Subjects would be easier to find. I'll use GG's search browser too next time. I'm always telling others to search but didn't do it myself. Thanks again. |

Your mother was on the right track, Dirtyhands, but she should have sprinkled the pepper on the soil! Squirrels have a keen sense of smell and are repelled by pepper, tabasco, peppermint oil, chilli powder, etc. I did a brief post on squirrels on my blog recently but I'll go back to the subject shortly and cover the myriad ways of gaining the upper hand on them. |

Do any of you that have cats have problems with squirrels? I am thinking of getting two for the back yard. |

Two squirrels or two cats? I have squirrels and a cat. The cat is fascinated by the squirrels and would love to catch one. We're concerned about him gettng bitten. Our backyard has a fence around it so the squirrels are able to make it up the fence, though there's been a few close calls. Generally we don't let him out when the squirrel is on the feeder. |
