Hi,

I am new to gardening and this forum.
We are planning on starting a small vegetable garden. In the fall, I prepared an area where we would like to plant (I just removed weeds, took a soil test, added some topsoil and fertilzer and turned it all over). I started some vegetables (tomatoes, pepper etc) inddor and plan to put them out late may.

Last week, I noticed that there were like a milion weeds in the vegetable bed. So we ripped them out over the weekend (a lot of hard work). I am afraid that by the time I am ready to plant the seedlings the weeds will be back.

How do I prevent them? Do I use herbicide? Will that not affect the seedlings I will put in? I heard that mulching will help...but do I mulch even before planting? And what do I do to the mulch when I am ready to plant?

You can try mulching around your veggies. It won't hurt them and it will help keep down weeds.

If your going to wait a few more weeks you can spread some newspaper and stake it down. It looks unsightly but it will make your back feel better.

It sounds like there could be a lot of weed seeds in your garden.

One way to organically kill off weed seeds is to lay down black plastic for awhile before planting. The warmth of the sunlight hitting the black plastic will heat up the ground and kill off the weed seeds. It will also kill off any existing weeds and block new weed seeds from getting in that area.
