Hi All, I'm new to this forum and lawn/gardening. I'm a 1st time home owner and I have some basic question related to lawn care as I see my lawn in a very bad shape after winter (tookover the house with a snow covered lawn). Can someone point me to older discussion on following items or provide ans here: 1. Grass is quiet long, maybe 4-6 inches,,, any recommendation on how to best start cutting it using a mower? 2. Quiet a few dead patches (Thatch?), a friend mentioned i have to 'de-thatch' it,, any thing i should take into consideration? 3. Once i pull-out the dead patches, do i need to put seeds? if yes how do i know which ones are best for my garden? I'll start with these basics, and come back with more. Thanks -George |

Thanks -George Ahhh, I was waiting for the first grass question to come along! 1. Set your mower so you only cut a third of the grass at one time so you don't stress the plant. Yes, grass is a plant!! You also want to leave the grass 2 1/2-3 inches long for a number of reasons. 2. However, since you have thatch, you'll need to cut the grass closer so you can rake out the dead grass. Water can't reach the roots if there's thatch. Might be good to cut the grass a few times before cutting it close. 3. You will need to reseed; otherwise you're giving weeds a chance to move into the bare soil. Rough up the soil, adding compost if necessary. You can call a good nursery to find out what grass seed is recommended in your area. You'll still want to know about seeding! |
