What kind of fern should I choose?

I'd like to plant some ferns up back in my bush area beside my fence for the enjoyment of my neighbour. Since a house was built behind my property I have a dark area that doesn't grow any underbrush (there used to be wild honeysuckle, periwinkle, as well as naturalized bulbs that required some sunlight) and I thought it would be a good place for some ferns. I would appreciate any suggestions as to what would do well in zone 4. My days of tramping in the bush are over so I can't acquire any freebies.

My favorite ferns are the maidenhairs with their thin black stems and lacy fronds. I don't know whether any grow in your zone though. I have the five-finger fern and the Himalayan maidenhair, which I recommend highly. It takes a few years to get established, but then it spreads into a beautiful patch. It's evergreen and the new growth is a gorgeous bronze color. |

Thanks for replying. I'll look into them. Anybody else have any ideas? I want to be sure that they will thrive before going to the expense of buying them. |

Thanks Ron. They are in an area that has lots of leaf-mould. It's a really natural setting. Would I still have to add compost? |
